Teak from Indonesia has a global reputation for a reason. The wood is dense, naturally water-resistant, and develops a beautiful silver-grey patina outdoors or a warm honey-gold finish inside. It outlasts almost every alternative at the price point. Bali’s teak furniture workshops, concentrated in areas like Gianyar, have been producing export-quality pieces for decades. The craftsmanship is excellent. The challenge is knowing which workshops use proper timber and which ones cut corners.

Documentation for teak exports, non-negotiable
Teak is a controlled species in Indonesia. Proper export documentation, including a legal timber certificate (SVLK) and, for some destinations, CITES documentation, is essential. I handle this for every teak shipment and make sure your goods clear customs without issue.
This isn’t optional. Teak furniture without correct documentation can be seized at customs in Australia, the EU, and the USA. Every supplier I work with is verified on this point during factory and supplier visits.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bali teak legal to export?
Yes. Indonesian plantation teak is legal to export with the correct documentation (SVLK legal timber certificate). I work only with suppliers using legal-origin timber and ensure all required certificates are in place before anything ships.
What’s the difference between Grade A and Grade B teak?
Grade A is cut from the heartwood, the densest and most durable part of the tree. More consistent colour, more weather-resistant. Grade B and C include more sapwood, which is lighter and less durable. For export furniture I always specify Grade A and verify this during factory visits.
Can you do custom teak furniture to my design?
Yes. Many of my clients source custom teak pieces with specific dimensions, joinery details, or finish specifications. I manage the custom brief in Bahasa with the workshop, oversee the sample process, and confirm before full production.
